Reading for Rescue
What is Reading for Rescue?
Reading for Rescue is a special initiative by the West Valley Humane Society that brings together young learners and shelter animals for a heartwarming experience. Research indicates that reading to animals in a shelter environment can have a soothing impact on both the animals and the readers.
How Does it Work?
As a participant in Reading for Rescue, you have the opportunity to choose from our collection of children’s books or bring your own reading material to share with our shelter animals. We provide a cozy spot with a blanket or towel to sit on, and you can also use one of our chairs or bring your own cushion for added comfort.
Bringing Joy to Shelter Animals
Reading for Rescue serves a dual purpose: it enriches the lives of shelter animals and fosters a love of reading in young learners. By reading to our animals, you help reduce their stress and anxiety, making their time in the shelter more pleasant.
How to Get Started
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved, we ask all participants to schedule a meeting with our Education Coordinator after the Reading for Rescue application has been submitted. During this meeting, we’ll discuss our program’s expectations and provide any additional information you may need.
We look forward to having you join us in our mission to bring comfort and happiness to shelter animals through the joy of reading!
